Co-founder and Executive Director Pamela Toman began Literacy San Antonio as a Signature Project of the Junior League of San Antonio, Inc. in 2006.
The project became a separate nonprofit in January 2010, and then Texas Representative Joaquín Castro partnered with Literacy San Antonio to establish the first SAReads® Children’s Book Drive. A countywide book bank quickly formed to increase access to books in underserved areas of our community. The book bank is located inside Firstmark Credit Union’s Gulfdale branch .
SAReads® launched its tutoring program in partnership with Texas A&M-San Antonio’s College of Education and Human Development in 2011.
After analyzing student reading outcomes and extensive reading research, SAReads® partnered with Southwest ISD to train, coach and support teachers to use the science of reading at a pilot campus in fall 2017. The project expanded to eleven campuses in fall 2018, and SAReads® looks forward to serving many more children, teachers and schools in the years to come.
