After a successful pilot program at Big Country Elementary School in Spring 2016, SAReads is excited to introduce a new model of its Reading Instruction Program in all 11 elementary schools in the Southwest Independent School District.
SAReads recently trained more than 150 pre-service teachers from A&M -SA’s College of Education and Human Development to participate in our Reading Instruction Program this semester. For the first time, each tutor will analyze student assessment data and prepare individualized lesson plans for two K–3 students. Each tutoring session will address skills the students are still developing with customized lesson plans to meet the student’s individual needs.
Previously, tutors followed prescribed lesson plans for their students. The new model increases the impact of our Reading Instruction Program for both students and tutors.
SAReads has partnered with A&M-SA for five years to facilitate the experiential learning component of its Foundations of Early Literacy course. Our new model provides pre-service teachers more experience interpreting student data, lesson planning, and logging notes to track each student’s progress. These future teachers gain a deeper understanding of the five components of literacy.
We look forward to another year with our partners at SWISD and A&M-SA, and we are excited to see the students and pre-service teachers excel with the improvements to our Reading Instruction Program.
