Tips for Emerging Readers

Asking the right question is an important way to determine if your child understands what they've just read. To be effective, it should be a question that is specific to that story. This is also referred to as a text-dependent question. For instance, who is the narrator (main character) in Green Eggs and Ham? Answer: Sam-I-Am.

If your child is a beginning reader, you can help them remember details about the book by pointing out illustrations or by making a direct connection to their life (a pet, sibling, life experience etc.)  For an example of how text-dependent questions help develop your child's reading fluency, you can click on this video from a first-grade classroom.
