The word is out! The SAReads Book Bank has donated a record number of books to Bexar County teachers. This summer, the Book Bank has provided over 17,000 books to area teachers just in time for back-to-school. Since January, over 28,000 books have been provided to teachers and public school librarians for use by children in their classroom libraries, as well as through book giveaways and special school events.
While the SAReads Book Bank has provided more books to children through the hands of teachers than ever before, SAReads staff is currently postponing Book Bank operations until Summer Book Drive books can be processed and re-shelved. Those who have requested free books from the SAReads Book Bank have been placed on a waitlist and will be contacted as soon as there is a sufficient inventory of books to select from.
The SAReads Book Bank prides itself on providing only the highest quality gently-used titles. Every book donated to the Book Bank must be screened for damage, cleaned, sorted and shelved so that recipients can select books based on the grade level of the children they serve. SAReads is currently seeking volunteers to help process the over 16,000 books that have been donated so far to the SAReads Book Bank. SAReads staff is currently retrieving book collection barrels from their partnering donation locations, and will have the final numbers of books donated to the Book Bank soon.
We appreciate the generosity of Book Bank donors, and the patience of those waiting to receive access to San Antonio's only book bank. Volunteer power will help us reopen SAReads Book Bank operations faster! If you or your group is interested in helping #stocktheshelves, submit our online form and SAReads will contact you to set up an volunteer appointment.
