Our Journey to the Science of Reading
Co-founder and Executive Director Pamela Toman began Literacy San Antonio as a Signature Project of the Junior League of San Antonio, Inc.
The project became a separate nonprofit in January 2010, and then Texas Representative Joaquin Castro partnered with Literacy San Antonio to establish the first SAReads® children’s book drive. A countywide book bank quickly formed inside Firstmark Credit Union’s Gulfdale branch to increase access to books.
SAReads® launched its tutoring program in 2011 in partnership with Texas A&M-San Antonio’s College of Education and Human Development. After analyzing student reading outcomes and reading research, SAReads® partnered with Southwest ISD to train, coach and support teachers to use the science of reading in fall 2017.
Modern brain research proves virtually all children can learn to read with effective instruction.
