Supporting Children by Supporting Teachers
Raising children's reading achievement requires changing reading instruction in the classroom. SAReads® provides training, instructional coaching, resources and books to help in-service and pre-service teachers acquire specialized science-based reading instruction (SBRI) knowledge and skills to successfully teach children to read.
In partnership with Southwest ISD leaders, SAReads® provides SBRI professional development to teachers and instructional staff across an entire school district, along with coaching and support through literacy facilitators.
The SAReads® Book Bank is a clearinghouse for collecting, cleaning, sorting and redistributing books to the community. The SAReads® Book Bank provides free books to Bexar County teachers, nonprofits and children. Teachers and nonprofits can request free books by submitting a book bank request form. Community members can host an SAReads® book drive.
In partnership with Texas A&M University San Antonio’s College of Education and Human Development, Kindergarten through 4th grade students receive weekly reading tutoring from pre-service teachers enrolled in reading instruction courses.
SAReads® and community partners, offer literacy enrichment experiences and celebrations for children who do not have access to these opportunities. These experiences support classroom learning to help children learn to read proficiently.
