SAReads Family Engagement

Early literacy expert Dr. Nell Duke states that “parents need to be instructed on ways they can enhance their child’s literacy skills.” Children's low reading outcomes are rooted in the need for better teacher preparation and programs for parents and guardians.

The SAReads Family Engagement program operates year-round to strengthen family involvement and offer learning enhancement experiences for children who do not have access to these opportunities. We offer events and workshops for families of children in the SAReads Reading Instruction Program, as well as families of children at all SAReads campuses. We provide research-based “Read Aloud” workshops from UT Austin’s Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk that are designed to build vocabulary and comprehension skills. The workshop helps establish a consistent home reading routine with special emphasis on learning and reinforcing new vocabulary while building enthusiastic readers. We also deliver workshops to help students continue reading over the summer and prevent the summer slide.

SAReads students are encouraged to participate in the Mayor’s Summer Reading Program and enjoy the many services provided by the San Antonio Public Libraryincluding a trip to the annual San Antonio Book Festival. Families enjoy events including author readings and a summer camp at the San Antonio Botanical Garden, end-of-school celebrations hosted by the Omni Hotel at the Colonnade and back-to-school celebrations hosted by the Spurs Silver and Black Give Back.

What families are saying

SAReads actually helped my son a lot. When they would come home, they would always come home with books, different books a lot of books, and they would always come show me “Oh mommy look! Books! I got some books,” and they were all excited to read them.
— Tania, SAReads parent

It was hard for them to identify the vowels, how to pronounce the letters. And now they can read through a sentence without having an issue. And it was the time that SAReads has spent with my kids. It was awesome to meet the other parents. To know that SAReads has taken time to spend with our children. They read to the kids. The kids went home with the books. Jackie hasn’t put the book down yet, or Joel.
